High from above yellow rubber ducks could be spotted floating out onto Porterdale’s Yellow River Saturday. Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central Georgia’s Duck Derby event streamed virtually this year and was supported by the community more than ever this year.

“We sold over 5,200 ducks this year,” Bob Mackey, CEO and President of BGCNCG, shared. “Every day we continued to see duck sales pour in and it felt like the community’s way of saying we’re here to stand with you during this time. It was excited to see our ducks launch and to watch as individuals watched our race on our Facebook page live. We’ve been sharing throughout this time that ‘Together We Will’ get through this and that saying rang true this weekend at our event.”

This year’s event was the third installment of Duck Derby in partnership with the City of Porterdale.

“We love partnering with Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central Georgia,” Josephine Kelly, Downtown Development Director for Porterdale, shared. “We believe in their mission and know the care and enrichment they provide is vital especially during these uncertain times.”

Winners for this year’s event, including the grand prize of $10,000, were announced via live stream after the conclusion of the event. This year’s first prize winner is Jerry Smith of Madison. Second place winner William Graden will receive a trip to the Oaks Golf Course in Covington. Third place winner Ben Coggins will receive a helicopter ride through Atlanta and fourth place winner Matt Britt will receive an iPad mini.

All of the fundraiser’s proceeds benefit the BGCNCG’s Clubs located in Newton, Madison, Walton, Greene, and Lamar Counties. Funds will be used toward the Club’s daily operations.

“Together we will continue to be a beacon of hope for our youth,” Mackey shared. “We’ll continue to need the community’s partnership to do this work and it’s been amazing to see this event grow into what is today. We can’t wait for next year’s race and we hope that it will be in person!”

Mackey also added a huge thank you to the City of Porterdale for their partnership and assistance on making Duck Derby happen.
