BGCNCG Youth of the Year Preps for Statewide Competition

Quanderious Briscoe recently delivered his speech that awarded him the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central Georgia Youth of the Year. Briscoe delivered his speech to a packed room, which were visibly moved by his story of triumph over circumstance.

For this Pete Nance Boys & Girls Club member, the experience is enriching, as he is preparing to compete in Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s statewide competition for Youth of the Year. If he places there, he will go on to compete at the national level for BGCA.

Recently named regional Youth of the Year after competing with local club Youths of the Year from Madison and Walton County Clubs within BGCNCG, Briscoe has been continuing his education and preparation for competition through the Youth of the Year program.

This program has been in place since 1947 and its purpose is to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Club members. Each year, one exceptional young person from a Boys & Girls Club rises to the role of National Youth of the Year. The journey to being named National Youth of the Year begins locally and progresses to state, regional and national levels.

Lake Club members were given the opportunity to hear first hand how this program and his local Club have shaped Briscoe’s life.

“Quanderious' story was very moving, and it was compelling to see how he has benefited from being a member of the Pete Nance Boys & Girls Club," Deb Agran, PNBGC First Tee Program Volunteer and Lake Club Member.

Public speaking is one of three areas Briscoe will be competing in. He will also be judged on his interview and writing skills. After being named at the regional level, Quanderious was awarded with scholarship funding and a new HP laptop. At the state and national level there are further scholarship funding for higher education.

“I have enjoyed seeing the growth of Quanderious throughout this process as he has shown tremendous amounts of initiative to prepare himself to be the best Youth of the Year possible,” Brad Parr, Pete Nance Boys & Girls Club Director. “I am confident in his ability to excel at the state competition and am honored to be a part of this experience.”

Parr said his progression could not have been possible without the loving support of community members who have dedicated their time to helping Quanderious grow.

BGCNCG Hosts Winter 2018 Training

We're building a world-class environment for our youth & staff

In preparation for a New Year of youth development, the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central Georgia prepped its staff with its Winter 2018 staff-wide training, which focused on new Youth Development Tools, Safety Practices, First-Aid and Program structure. 

Staff first set goals for what they desired to learn from this Winters training, which was overviewed at the end to see if each member felt further equipped upon close of the training.

Some of those goals to have answered were questions like:

How do we instill self-esteem into the youth we serve?

How can we better connect with each youth?

After an overview of best safety practices, Bob Mackey, CEO & President of BGCNCG, immersed staff in the experience of Club youth during his Program Basics presentation.

Staff participated in challenging team-building exercises used inside Clubs as teaching methods for self-esteem, discipline, teamwork and how to have fun in positive environments.

Breakout sessions were offered to staff, which covered iCivics Training, provided by Kathy o’Neal of Georgia Family Connections Partnership, Annual Report training for data collection of how our Clubs perform year-to-year and Positive Discipline & Guidance training.

“To continue to service of providing world-class youth development to our communities, training is a must and a need,”Bob Mackey said. “We take pride in the services we provide and want to insure that our youth feel safe and positively equipped with tools that will impact them for the rest of their lives. Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central Georgia provides club experiences for Walton,  Greene, Putnam and Morgan Counties. They serve over 1,500 youth in North Central Georgia.

The Oaks Golf Course Christmas Tournament to Benefit Newton BGC

The Oaks Golf Course Christmas Tournament slated for Dec. 16!

The Oaks Golf Course will tee off for a cause Dec. 16 with its annual Christmas Tournament! The golf course will be transformed into a Christmas themed obstacle course filled with goofy golf holes.

This year the Newton County Boys & Girls Club will be the charity recipient.

For Nancy Schulz, Oaks Golf Course owner, partnering with the NCBGC made perfect sense for the holiday season.

“Every year we select a charity. This year is seemed fitting to select the Newton County Boys & Girls Club, Schultz said. “We are in desperate need of a local club and, as you know, it takes funding. We have been raising funds to open a program and build a facility in the western part of the county.”

Newton County Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. NCBGC is set to open a storefront location in the summer of 2018 serving teens.

Afraid your expert level may not be up to par? All experience levels are welcome to The Oaks Golf Course. This tournament is all about celebrating the season and coming together for a wonderful community cause! The format will be a 4-player scramble with the cost set prior to event is $60 per player and $70 on the day of event. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 AM.
